Overload — GSD 24’
I had a great time taking pictures at Overload’s Go Skateboarding Day 2024 event at City Heights skate park. Taking a skate photograph is a really specialised skill. I took the assignment with a ‘covering the day’ mentality, I would never pretend to be a skate photographer when I know some of the greats personally. That being said, I am a skateboarder and I’m well studied as far as a skate picture goes so I have the timing right. I feel like I captured the feeling on the day and some great skate pictures!
Documenting Go Skateboarding Day 2024 at City Heights Skatepark for Overload Skateshop
I had a great time photographing Overload Skateshop’s Go Skateboarding Day 2024 at City Heights Skatepark in San Diego. It was a full day of community, energy, and skateboarding, and I approached the assignment with the goal of capturing the atmosphere and storytelling the event from start to finish.
Skate photography is a niche craft, one that requires both technical skill and a deep understanding of timing. I would never call myself a skate photographer in the traditional sense—especially because I know some of the best to ever do it personally—but as a lifelong skateboarder who’s studied skate photos for decades, I knew how to frame the moments that mattered.
From portraits of the crowd to well-timed action shots, I aimed to capture not just the tricks, but the feeling of the day—the energy of the local skate scene, the friendships, the sun-baked concrete, and the sense of celebration that makes Go Skateboarding Day so special.
Proud to contribute to this day and to support Overload in documenting San Diego skate culture.
